GigPark is a social recommendations application that gives users a more personal way to discover new businesses. Most consumers agree that they give more weight to the opinions of the people they know rather than reviews they read or see elsewhere. GigPark provides users with a platform to share recommendations or see what their friends recommend. These come from the user’s friends list, so each recommendation is from someone they know personally. When no recommendations are available, the user can request them through the GigPark Ask feature. Users can also post their own reviews of local businesses so their friends can see the places they recommend and those they do not. The recommendation pages include the poster’s comments, contact information for the business (if available) and links that allow the user to recommend the location as well or add it to their favorites list. The user can also send a thanks message to the poster through the businesses’ profile page.Show more screenshots »
GigPark was founded in January of 2007 by Noah Godfrey and Pema Hegan. Based out of Toronto, Canada, the team currently includes less than five individuals. GigPark was started as a social recommendations service and currently offers its users an excellent resource to gather honest opinions about local businesses. A Facebook app has also been added so users can take GigPark to their social network. GigPark was sold to CanPages Inc. in August, 2009.
GigPark facilitates the exchange of recommendations and reviews. Many other sites offer users a way to review real ratings and reviews, however not all are intended solely for this purpose. GigPark incorporates a number of features that make it easy and fun to give and get recommendations from the people the user knows and trusts.
The GigPark website offers unique character highlighted in hints of purple, green, blue and red. The stylish logo features an elegant leaf accent while the rest of the website is contrasted by comical cartoon people and a white background. This balance of unique detail and plain design works exceptionally well for GigPark. Users can easily find their way around, yet the site still adds its own unique style to the process.
GigPark offers a simple, yet valuable service that thrives by having more users participate. Asking for a subscription payment or other fee to create an account would work against the nature of the site. Anyone can create an account for free. There are no charges for access or utilizing any of the current features. This is a great way to keep things honest and give all users a place to voice their opinions and share reviews that could help others.
GigPark is a helpful tool for just about anyone. If the user plans to try a new business they can turn to GigPark to get good, honest reviews about the business. The reviews and recommendations come from people the user actually knows, which helps users make a decision about making a purchase or buying a service.
